Woodbury Ski Area celebrates its 40th Anniversary "Winter Carnival"
January 28th 2012. Our Winter Carnival is a tradition where we host a fun filled
day with kid's activities, live music DJ and our BIG AIR competition.
Woodbury Ski Area president, Rod Taylor, former member of the US Ski Team, national
downhill ski champion & combined, record setter in the Gelande Jump contest
for his 222 FT ski jump and competed on the first freestyle circuit, is celebrating
his 40th year and is offering 50% all lift tickets for skiing, snowboarding
and tubing on January 28th for all Woodbury residents with a valid ID. The celebration
will also include music and dancing in the lodge and a freestyle snowboard &
alpine competition. Anyone interested in participating in the competition can
contact Woodbury Ski Area directly for more details.
.
During his 40 years at Woodbury, Mr. Taylor, a forerunner in the industry, has
many accomplishments in the skiing community. In addition to starting the Connecticut
Interscholastic Ski racing League, Mr. Taylor's ski area was the first to allow
snowboarding in the country, the first to offer an alpine terrain park &
half-pipe, and first to open an outdoor skate park on the East Coast. In earlier
day, sledding was permitted on the ski trails from the top of the chair-lift.
Eventually, sledding was discontinued in favor of tubing; both snow and summer.
In more recent years, snow bikes have been added to the available activities.
In addition, he covers cross country ski trails with man-made snow. In previous
years, he offered bungee jumping from hot air balloons and cultural events,
such as concerts featuring music from around the world. Past concerts hosted
at Woodbury have included Reggae artists such as the original Wailers and the
I Threes, UB40, Steel Pulse, Lucky Dube, Fela Kuti - king of juju music, Aswad,
Youssu N'Dour, the Peter Tosh Band and King Sunny Ade; Rock Legends such as
Muddy Waters, The King of Blues, The Allman Brothers, the original Birds, The
Band, The Outlaws, The Marshall Tucker Band, and Bonnie Raitt; and Blue Grass
Legends such as Earle Scruggs, Vasser Clements and Seldom Scene By holding cultural
events and offering activities such as summer tubing and Zorbing, he turned
a seasonal business into an all season business.
While the Woodbury ski area is considered small, their influence has stretched
far beyond the community, inspiring many ski areas in the Country to follow
suit by offering summer and cultural events. The example set by Woodbury Ski
Area in hosting cultural gatherings at a time when no one else imagined such
events has also influenced the local community in holding cultural concerts
and events. Woodbury Ski Area is proud of what it has accomplished in its first
forty years.
